Infertility in Men
About 30% of infertility cases are caused by problems with the male reproductive system, mainly in the production or transportation of sperm.
Sperm production disorders
This is the most common cause of male infertility that responsible for 75% of the cases. It includes low number of sperms, reduced sperm mobility and abnormal shape of sperm. Disorders can be caused by genetic defect, infection, testicular trauma, hormonal imbalance, or exposure to radiation and certain medications.
Anatomical or structural problems
Infertility may be caused by obstruction or blockage along the pathways where sperms are produced and travelled. Testicle infection, testicular cancer or surgery can seriously damage the quality of semen produced; whereas a blocked or obstructed ejaculatory duct may result in preventing the delivery of sperm to the vagina.
Immune system disorders
This is a condition when men develop antibodies to attack their own sperm; hence, affecting their ability to fertilize an egg.
