Ovulation Induction (OI)

Many people believe that infertility treatments usually involve very advanced assisted reproductive technology; however, sometimes simple interventions are as effective as advanced treatments. For example, simply have sexual intercourse at the time of ovulation would enhance your chance of pregnancy by making sure that the sperm is in the fallopian tube ready to meet the egg at the time when the egg is released.

You can also maximise your chance for pregnancy by combining timed intercourse with infertility medications that induce ovulation. There are various medications available in Hong Kong that helps stimulate the development and the release of eggs from the ovaries. These include clomiphene citrate, human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist/agonists. We will discuss these further in the next section.

The method of combining ovulation induction treatment with timed sexual intercourse is particularly suitable for couples who have:

  • A normal result from sperm analysis
  • No significant ovarian dysfunction
  • Problems in ovulation e.g. PCOS and Hyperprolactinemia
  • No obstruction of fallopian tubes
